Background, Mission, and How You can Help:
Why men with breast cancer need your help and support:
Did you know that men die from breast cancer? Men are dying from breast cancer! One percent of all breast cancer cases strike men. The American Cancer Society estimates that this year alone, 1,970 men will be diagnosed and 390 will die from the male breast cancer. Yet most people don’t know these facts and are under the false belief that breast cancer only effects women.
The lack of the public’s awareness has a negative impact on men’s chances of detecting, treating, and surviving the male breast cancer. Because breast cancer is falsely believed to be a woman’s issue, the men don’t bother to ask their doctor about an unusual lump in the breast and are therefor less likely to have an early diagnosis of the disease when it’s most treatable.
Even if the cancer is detected before it has spread throughout the body, most doctors are undertrained or just don’t know how to effectively treat men. Current breast cancer research is overwhelmingly focused on women, but the research findings that work for women do not necessarily work for men. The result is men who undergo dangerous experimental treatments that waste time and money.
Moreover, when faced with the battle for life, the men don’t have a support community to take shelter. Often men think themselves to be abnormal and suffer the stigma of an undermined manhood. Very few outreach or financial support institutions exist to assist men through the trying times. Low level of morale and optimism is common. Compared to women, men are much more likely to loose the battle with breast cancer.
History and Mission Goals of the Men with Breast Cancer Organization:
Donny is one such man fighting the male breast cancer. On October 13th, 2010, during the National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Donny Kinson and his friend Alexander Shenkar decided to take matter into their own hands and create the Men with Breast Cancer Organization. The mission goals of the organization spell pride and they are as follows:
- Petition the government, charity, and research organization to recognize and support the men diagnosed with breast cancer.
- Reeducate the public concerning the occurrence, prevention, and treatment of breast cancer in men.
- Interconnect friends, family, support groups, and medical professionals with the men diagnosed with breast cancer.
- Document men’s fight with breast cancer and raise the public’s awareness.
- Empower men to fight and win the battle with breast cancer.
How you can help the organization and make a difference:
This website a support community for men with breast cancer. We invite you to join the forum, post comments, tell your friends about it, and please donate. Our goal is to establish an online community where men facing this dreadful disease can find a safe haven and guidance. Together we can draw strength from our experiences and find solutions to the issues that the oncologists, nurses, and foundations leave you alone to figure out. You are not alone! This website is where you can find supporters and other men going through the same thing as you. As part of the awareness raising campaign, Donny will document his fight with the breast cancer. He hopes to offer a boost of morale and a voice for the men with the disease in the trenches. All donations will go directly to Donny’s treatment. Please help. We need your love and support.
